The popularity of St. Barthélemy (St. Barts, St. Barth) in the world of boat rentals and yacht charters is due in part to its geographical location about midway between Antigua and Virgin Gorda, two major sailing centers. While still uncrowded, the island could take, if necessary, 500 yachts, most of course, at anchor. Gustavia's harbor, 13 to 16 feet deep, has mooring and docking facilities for about 40 yachts. There are also fine anchorages at nearby Public, Corossol and Colombier. St. Barts has all the conveniences sailors need: fuel, water, ice, a well-stocked chandlery, supermarkets, duty-free liquor and fine French dining.

St. Barts boat rentals and yacht charters for as little as a half-day or as long as a month or more are available from a number of companies on the island. Options include everything from bare boat or crewed charters to hourly Sunfish rentals. Full day sails with snorkeling, lunch and a full bar thrown in are a popular all-inclusive choice. A semi-submersible "submarine" sails from Gustavia to explore the nearby reefs through its underwater portholes, either in the afternoon or after dark.

Colorful events on the yachting calendar annually are the St. Barth Bucket Regatta in March, which hosts some of the most spectacular sailing vessels in the world, Les Voiles de St. Barth, a prestigious international event held in April, and the three-day West Indies Regatta in May, with its emphasis on traditional wooden boat building and sailing. The St. Barth Cata Cup, the Caribbean's most important sports catamaran event, is held each November.

St. Barts fishing boat charters are available through several companies. Full-day charters (with meals and drinks) or half day charters (drinks only) are available with fishing gear for four included. Big game deep sea sport fishing is also offered. Most fishing is in the waters north of Lorient, Flamands and Corossol. Popular catches include tuna, bonito, dorade, marlin, wahoo and barracuda. Fly-fishing from the shore seems to be increasingly popular.
