Les Saintes Water and Land Sports
The coastlines of Les Saintes (Iles des Saintes) are punctuated with rocky coves and peaceful bays. They create a fantastic playground for fishing, sailing, swimming, diving, and snorkeling enthusiasts.
The underwater world of these tiny islands has attracted deep-sea divers as renowned as Jacques Cousteau but even beginners can explore their famous crystal-clear waters. Several local dive services rent tanks and gear, give lessons and arrange excursions to some 15 dive sites. These calm waters provide a breeding ground for rock lobster, red snapper, kingfish, conch and dorade, all staples of the islanders' proud culinary traditions. Snorkeling is excellent on the island, with two of the best spots at Plage Pompierre and the bay of Pain de Sucre.
Glass bottom catamaran tours and a variety of sailing and snorkeling excursions are offered. Transparent kayaks and stand-up paddle boarding as well as windsurfing are available. The island's first kite surfing school opened recently.
Sailing is a very popular activity and boats arrive from everywhere to relax and enjoy the gorgeous bays. Hobie Cats are available for rent and a number of operators offer cruises around Terre-de-Haut and to other nearby islands. Jet Skis are not allowed in the local waters.
Hiking is the major land sport pursued in Les Saintes, with the trek to the top of Le Chameau (309 m or just over 1,000 ft) the most challenging. Less arduous hikes of approximately 2 hours each at Le Morne Morel and La Trace des Cretes offer great views and lead through natural terrain featuring the indigenous plant life of the island.
Mountain bikes are available for rent and there is a climbing school located in Marigot Bay. There are no golf courses in these little islands but tennis is available.
